White Grape Varieties - Generally Recommended
Aurore(Seibel 5279) Suitable for Wine and Dessert purposes .Very promising dual purpose disease resistant hybrid. Ripens well, good sized grapes on small bunches. Good crops .Fruity wine and nice eating. Mid season. A fine amateur grape
Bianca. New disease resistant hybrid variety from Hungary. A good sized grape, excellent eating and makes very good Sauvignon style wine. A reasonable though not enormous cropper, easy to grow.
Himrod Seedless Dessert grape. Mid-late, an American variety, a reasonably good cropper in the U.K. Disease resistant, genuinely seedless and certainly worth growing. I find the variety excellent eating. Heavier cropping indoors.
Kanzler. German wine grape. Early, high quality, decent crops with a rich intense flavour and aroma and high sugars. Earlier reports claim poor wood ripening and disease problems, but I have not found it so. Fine ‘auslese’ style wine, and the grapes eat well.
Madeline Angevine Wine or Dessert grape. This is probably the best all round variety for the U.K. It is early, carries good reliable crops with good sugars, and makes a fine flowery wine, which I find is always in demand. As a bonus the grapes, although small are delicious. Wood ripening is excellent. A good strain is vital - there are some very odd vines going under this name. Ours have been twice selected from the original Barrington-Brock clone. Thoroughly recommended.
Perdin. New French hybrid dessert ,may have wine possibilities. Loose golden grapes ,good bunches, disease resistant and early . Fine flavour.
Phoenix. Wine / dessert grape. A new German Hybrid, disease resistant. Potential for big crops and fine wine. Good Muscat eating when ripe, though really a wine grape.
Seyval Blanc Wine or Dessert grape. Formerly Seyve-Villard 5/276. Mid-late, a disease resistant hybrid. Very heavy crops (known as save-all among west country vignerons).Fine crisp dry wine, a winner of top awards for English wine. Also good in blends. Makes a first class sparkling wine. Good and easy dessert on warm walls or under glass. Can be grown organically. A number of strains exist. High acids, low sugars, needs careful winemaking. An easy vine, and thoroughly recommended.
Solaris. New German hybrid wine grape. Disease resistant, early, with good crops and exceptionally high sugars. I am pleased with the quality of the small amounts of wine I have made. Highly recommended. Good eating, though grapes a bit small.
Zalagyongye New Hungarian hybrid. Good wine, and enjoyable dessert. Fine golden berries in loose bunches. High quality, ripens medium early. Good disease resistance. Very promising.

Albalonga Wine purposes. A new German experimental variety. Reisling style but earlier. Ripens but would need a good site.
Amandin New French hybrid. Large disease resistant Muscat grape, excellent quality .Late. Indoors only. Claims to the contrary are simply wrong.
Atlantis New hybrid, promising dual purpose sort.
Auxerrois Wine purposes. A pinot, wine can be good if acidity is not to high .Late, rather disease prone, modest crops. Best sites only.
Bacchus Wine purposes. Muller Thurgau cross. Mid-late, rather disease prone, regular moderate crops. Some very good wines have been made in the U.K. from this variety, but do taste first.
Birstaller Muscat. Hybrid, large berry, fine flavour .Eats well, wine possibilities. Disease resistant, good crops.
Chardonnay.(Pinot) Wine grape. very late here, but ripens, just. Very high acids. Good crops but needs the very best site and season and to make decent wine the grapes must be ripe. Just too late in this country I think, unless grown under cover. A genuine early clone is needed.
Chasselas D'Or Dessert and wine purposes. Late, moderate crops, fine eating, pleasant fruity wine. Best on wall or greenhouse.
Chasselas Rose. Famous old French grape, used for both eating and wine. Ripens well for me. Fine dessert though grapes are not large, and a good cropper that makes very good wine. Deserves a commercial trial.
Chasselas Vibert Dessert grape. Similar Chasselas D’Or but a better grape in my opinion, earlier and heavier cropping. Larger grapes.
Chenin Blanc Wine grape. Just too late, a pity. Big crops, fine flavour, ferocious acidity. Try under cover perhaps in a tunnel.
Csabyonge Dessert grape. Ultra early, and an easy vine, but tiny crops. Fine flavour. Also known as Perle De Csaba.
Dalkauer Wine/Dessert grape. Parentage obscure. Reportedly a Veltliner mutation, but wholly dissimilar, and looks like a hybrid to me. Too late outside, but gives enormous disease free crops with big bunches of big grapes. Try on wall or in a greenhouse.
Dattier De Beyrouth Dessert grape. A famous old variety of the highest quality. Indoors only, and may need heat.
Edwards No 1.Seedling from Seyval Blanc x Aurore. Ripens well ,mid season wine/dessert. Disease free ,good flavour. Promising.
Eger Csillaga Hungarian dual purpose hybrid Ripens well, excellent grapes, a promising variety. The name is incomplete, but the vine is worth planting..
Elbing Wine grape. Late, but will ripen on favourable sites. A heavy cropper but disease prone. Wine like that of Seyval Blanc, but of less quality, useful for sparkling wine.
Ehrenfelser Wine grape. Reisling style, a quality grape, but widespread trials suggest that it is just too late in normal years. Best sites only.
Excelsior Dessert grape. Mid- season, trouble free hybrid grape. Pleasant eating, disease resistant moderate crops. Good amateur grape.
Faber Wine grape. Mid-late fair crops, some good wine. Rather disease prone, and wood ripening is only fair. Best made dry?
Findling Wine/Dessert grape. This is early with good crops for me and good sugar levels. Acidity is low. It is supposed to be a mutation of Muller Thurgau. Really a wine grape, but pleasant eating. Disease prone, needs regular spraying.
Forta Wine grape. Pleasant fruity wine, ripens fairly late. A reasonable cropper, wine promising. Certainly worth an amateur trial
Fosters Seedling Dessert Grape. Just too late outside, good crops of medium sized table grapes on wall or in a cold greenhouse.
Freisamer Wine grape. Late, but moderate crops, rather high acid. A quality grape by reputation, but I think just too late on most sites.
Gewurtztraminer. Wine grape. Famous wine grape. Late here but ripens. Modest crops, top quality. I may have an early clone, as in general English growers find it just too late.
Golden Reisling Dessert/Wine grape. Came from Jackman’s nursery at Woking as Goldreisling, but not true to name. Still, a promising cultivar, good mid season crops of slightly muscat grapes.
GM323-58B German hybrid, has good disease resistance. Reisling type, about ten days earlier.
Goldreisling Wine grape. A Reisling x Courtellier Musque cross. Early, with medium sugars and acidity, regular moderate crops. Customers liked the wine, Reisling style with less acidity. Needs spraying.
Gutenborner. Wine/Dessert grape. Late, but ripens. Sometimes high acid. Disease prone, but nice wine if ripe enough.
Hecker. New German Hybrid. Ripens here. Good dessert, may have wine possibilities. Promising.
Huxelrebe Wine/Dessert grape. Mid- season, very variable crop. Vigorous growth, disease prone, cold sensitive. Grapes tend to rot as they ripen and tend to have a very high acidity. If you can grow it and ripen it, the wine can be very good and extremely marketable, but I cannot recommend it.
Isa. New French dessert grape, ripens outdoors ,very large grapes. fine flavour.
Juliamsrebe Wine/Dessert grape. Mid-late season, a reddy-pink dual purpose variety. Generally moderate crops and good sugar levels.
Kerner Wine grape. Very late in the U.K .Widely planted some years ago on good reports from Germany and some adroit salesmanship .Tends in Britain to low sugars and searingly high acidities. Vigorous, bushy, to train. Best sites, if at all.
Kernling Wine/Dessert grape .Reportedly a Kerner mutation. If so surprisingly dissimilar. Earlier, lower acidity, and an easier vine. Promising and far better than Kerner for the U.K.
Kozmapalme Muscatoly. New Hungarian Muscat variety ,ripens well, promising. It would appear to be a resistant hybrid.
Madeline Angevine (French clone) Dessert grape. The original and genuine - the grape we grow in the U.K. under this name probably has this as it's parent. Early dessert, very low acids. Amateur eating grape . Female flower, do not plant alone. .
Madeline Royale Dessert grape. Early pleasant modest cropper. On trial.
Madeleine Sylvaner. Wine/Dessert. Very early indeed .Good wood ripening ,moderate crops, some fine flowery wine. Needs cool sites or will get eaten by wasps.
Merzling. Hybrid wine grape, very promising ,ripens well.
Mireille Dessert grape. Officially a greenhouse grape, but ripens mid season outside for me. A muscat dessert grape of top eating quality. Unreliable outside though, , may need shelter for regular crops. For wall, greenhouse, or sheltered spot.
Morio Muscat Wine grape. Late, disease, disease prone, I tried three clones; two were useless, the one I kept ripens, just. Powerful flavour, big crops.
Muller Thurgau Wine grape. Mid-late, very widely planted, making some very successful prized winning wine. Disease prone. High vigour, which must be controlled if cropping is to be regular and good. Once the standard variety, currently unfashionable.
Muscat Blanc Dessert/Wine grape. Primarily an eating grape of fine flavour. Ripens mid-season, big bunch and berry, good crops. Difficult to propagate, distinctly promising.
Muscat De St Vallier French dual purpose hybrid. .Ripens well for me, promising.
Muscat St Laurent. Dessert. Not a big grape, but first class quality, wall or greenhouse.
No. 69 Wine grape. Un-named Traminer cross, ripens well though late. Fine flavour but light crops. Possible amateur alternative to Gewurtztraminer.
Oliver Irsay. Wine/Dessert grape. Hungarian grape, mid season, fine light muscat flavour genuinely dual purpose. Moderate crops so far. Appreciates a sheltered position.
Optima Wine grape. Early, a pleasant grape but botrytis prone. Fair crops and possible for dessert style wines.
Ora. New French table grape . Does well here. Large, richly flavoured grapes,2/3 weeks before Chasselas. Strongly recommended.
Orion Wine grape. New German hybrid. Late mid season. Heavy cropper ,makes good .wine. Recommended..
Ortega Wine grape. Mid-Season, a quality wine grape but in my experience a most unreliable setter. For this reason, not recommended.
Paletina .Hybrid, wine/dessert. Promising new Hungarian muscat variety .Ripens well, good crops.
Parsley Leaved Vine Dessert grape. Ancient ornamental Chasselas mutation. Late, but ripens well, giving modest crops of good dessert grapes which also make pleasant wine.
Perle Wine grape. Early, winter hardy, light, soft flowery wine, rather good. A reasonable cropper, and an easy vine for me. Worth amateur trial.
Pink Strawberry Dessert grape. Late pink Labrusca hybrid, wholly disease resistant and a good cover vine. Grapes hang until the leaves drop and are delicious of their kind.
Pinot Blanc Wine grape. Late, but ripens, acidity high. Mildew prone, but good crops, potential good wine. Best sites only.
Pinot Gris Wine grape. Just too late for me. Good crops, fine potential if ripe, but will need a good site. Some vineyards have done well with this, and I am obtaining fresh plants from one to trial.
Poloske Muscat Dessert/Wine grape. Ripens, early big muscat grapes .A disease resistant hybrid, promising.
Precoce De Bousquet Dessert grape. Very early muscat, big grapes, fine flavour. An unreliable cropper, but worthwhile for amateurs for quality and earliness.
Primavis Frontigan Dessert/Wine grape. Ripens well here, good crops of smallish muscat grapes. Might do well on wall or greenhouse.
Ravat 51 Wine grape. Late, but ripens. A disease free hybrid, potentially good quality but acidity high. Best sites only.
Rayon D'Or Hybrid dessert, synonym Seibel 4986.Ripens,fine Muscat flavour. Disease resistant. Promising.
Reichensteiner Wine/Dessert grape. Good crops and high sugars, rather disease prone. Moderate acidity. Wine tends to be rather neutral but I have tasted good examples.
Reisling Wine grape. very late classic wine grape, acidity usually very high. Really too late. Best sites or under cover.
Royal Muscadine Dessert grape. An ancient U.K. wall vine, ripens here un the open. Good dessert quality, probably a clone of Chasselas.
Sauvignon Blanc Wine grape. Very late, but ripens. Good crops. Potentially high quality but acidity very high.
Scheurebe Wine grape. Ripens, just. High acids good wood. Widely tried and discarded as just too late, despite fine wine potential. Best sites only for Reisling style wine.
Schonberger Wine grape. Rather late but ripens well on good sites, with some good sugars. Top quality, has made fine wine in the U.K. Best, I think, off-dry. A promising variety.
Seibel 5409 Wine grape. Late hybrid, some disease resistance, moderate, cropper. High acids, but wine surprisingly good.
Seiggerebe Wine or dessert grape. Very early, a large golden pink grape with a strong muscat flavour. Very good eating, and can make excellent wine. Moderate variable crops. Wasp attack can be a problem. A fine amateur grape and recommended where earliness is critical.
Seneca . Dessert hybrid, possible for wine. Ripens well, late mid season, with grapes of good quality. Moderate crops, sprawling habit of growth. Needs room when crops are better .Recommended – but give it space.
Senator Wine/Dessert grape. Supposed Sylvaner mutation, but few similarities. Early, a big grape, promising crops but weak, rather disease prone plants, difficult to propagate. Maybe worth a trial..
Septimer Wine grape. Early mid-season, a moderate cropper and an unreliable setter. Delicious spicy wine. Worth a trial, probably a grape for the keen amateur.
Serena Dessert/wine. an amurensis hybrid. Ripens well, good flavour. .Promising for wine ,good eating.
Seyve-Villiard 12375 Wine/dessert grape. Too late outside. Disease free, big bunches and grapes, enormous cropper. Try inside?
Stauffer. Hybrid new German variety, dessert or wine .Ripens well, promising.
Sylvaner Wine grape. Good crops, but does not ripen outside. Too late outside.
Theresa Hybrid dessert ,new Hungarian variety. Good ,but very late. Greenhouse only.
White Muscat Dessert/Wine grape. Unknown local variety, needs south wall or greenhouse, but gives big crops of big grapes in big loose bunches. When ripe, of the highest quality. Similar to an early Muscat d'Alexandria.
White Strawberry Dessert grape. Late Labrusca, needs wall or greenhouse. Big berry, disease free, enjoyable of it's kind when ripe.
Wurzer A quality grape. Rather late, needs a good site.
